Topic: “Empowering an EPON Network with Full Instrumentation for Network Health Monitoring, Fault Diagnosis, and Troubleshooting”
Speaker: Mr Rick Li, Senior Director, Technology and Strategic Development, Teknovus

Abstract
As EPON solution being deployed in volume worldwide, service providers are increasingly paying attention to features that allow them to operate and maintain their network efficiently, reduce OpEx, increase reliability with enhanced trouble shooting capability. In this presentation, we discuss and analyze several mechanisms and approaches that empower an EPON network with the capabilities to proactively monitor the optical performance of the passive ODN (Optical Distribution Network) and ONU/OLT optical transceiver components, to perform fault diagnosis when a failure occurs and further trouble shoot as necessary. These include OTDR based solution, optical transceiver DDMI (with SFF 8472 compliance) based solution, BER (8B/10B decoding errors and FEC errors) based solution for ODN and optical transceiver fault monitoring and diagnosis.

We will also show results from an ODN and optical transceiver fault monitoring and diagnosis platform and demonstrate how these mechanisms can be incrementally developed, integrated and evolved into a complete solution for full scale deployment.
